Artist Kelvin Yazzie comes to the Land to teach clay hand building techniques. He will discuss the origins of clay from his childhood perspective growing up on the Navajo Nation. Lisa Ortega will also join us, bringing clay that she has gathered herself on the Tohono O'odham Nation, telling us about this process and sharing experiences of learning about clay with her mother and grandmother. Kelvin will teach us how to make a cool clay rattle and clay whistle, and we will also design some of our own imaginary creations. Kate will provide additional refreshments of Prickly Pear juice and Mesquite chocolate chip cookies.

Included in this workshop is the option to join Kelvin at his downtown Tucson studio to fire your clay pieces.

Transportation: We will meet at Kestrel Kafe and caravan out to the Land from there. Roads can be rough, high-clearance vehicles are preferable, carpooling is encouraged

What to bring: a bag lunch and water bottle
